Helpful Links On Credit

FACT Act. A new law, the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, or FACT Act provides for a free credit report. To get the report for free, you must use a central Web site, toll-free number, or mailing address, rather than contacting the three credit reporting agencies individually. To order, go to www.annualcreditreport.com, call 877-322-8288, or complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form available at www.ftc.gov/credit and mail it to: Annual Report Request Service, P.O. box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348.

Lenders use a credit score to asses risk and determine loan rates. For a fee, you can request your credit score when you order your free report, from www.myfico.com or from one of the three major credit reporting bureaus.

Identity Theft. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes. Scam artists now use spam and pop-up messages in “phishing” expeditions to get you to divulge credit card numbers, account information, Social Security numbers, and other sensitive information. To learn more about phishing and how to prevent it, visit www.antiphishing.org/index.html.

Our advice? Don’t respond to e-mails or pop-ups asking for personal information. (Allsteel Credit Union will never call or e-mail you to ask for personal information.) Bogus e-mails may direct you to a fake Web site. They may also threaten to close your account or do something worse if you don’t do as they instruct. Ignore these messages, and do not click on their links.

Instead, forward bogus e-mails to spam@uce.gov. Then delete the messages from your e-mail. If you believe you’ve been scammed, file your complaint at www.ftc.gov or www.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp. Or call toll free 1-877-ETC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTYU: 1-866-653-4261.

To report a compromised Social Security number, call the Social Security Administration's Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271 or visit www.ssa.gov/oig/ifyou.htm.
